All of the essential oils have their niche, some are calming, uplifting, clarifying, or used specifically to aid the body/mind in healing, and some are an aphrodisiac.
Aphrodisiac. Dictionary definition…. a food drink or drug that is believed to enhance stimulate sexual desire.
The ancients used sandalwood, oud, rose, cacao, frankincense in blends or alone as aphrodisiacs.
Some of the above are also sacred scents used in meditation rituals.
They are also expensive and often endangered species.
My new favorite is oud…
It is an ingredient in many expensive perfumes and is also to my nose a perfume in its own right. One of the ancient sacred, it is intense, earthy, fecund and honeyish all at the same time. When I put this on my wrist I just want to smell it all day!!!
Basically, it is a fungus that grows on treetops in Indonesia. Now it is grown sustainably in Assam India. Eden botanicals have it if you want to invest… it goes a long way… I mix with an almond oil base for a body lotion or massage oil…. sensationally delicious.
To me the ultimate in aphrodisiac.
One needs to experiment, to see which is right for you.
Lavender may be your go-to scent, it is herbaceous and relaxing. Sandalwood is always in my go to. Hard also to find a good sandalwood…. as the forests have been diminished… however they are reforesting in south-east Asia. Ananda Apothecary has one as does Floracopeia…. one of my go-to sites as I know the quality of the oils is superb.
You can begin and experiment with your local favorite outlet for oils… the basics…. peppermint, bergamot, orange… all uplifting.
As you become curious to delve deeper into this transporting realm of smells… and it’s effect on a body mind spirit level….
Our senses awaken in many ways, seeing, hearing, touching, smelling. It is a primal reaction to walk through a field of wildflowers and be transported back to an earlier time. Of course, the smell is very individual, what is sensual to one person may not be to other. It is rare that I find a scent to be offensive for most people, and I am not talking perfumes, that for the most part are synthetic fragrances. Essential oils are for the most part pure, plant-derived. They remind us of life in nature, taking us back to a time when we spent more of our lives in the forest or at the coast.
I am reminded of my years at the beach, in mid-June, the beach roses bloomed in the dunes, together with the wild honeysuckle. That combination mixed with the scent of the ocean was delicious.
What does that for you?
Experiment!!!
It is a path worth traveling.
